Enhancing Affordability for Patients through High-Value Prescribing
INTRODUCTION TO ENHANCING AFFORDABILITY FOR
PATIENTS THROUGH HIGH-VALUE PRESCRIBING
As we have discussed throughout the first two sets of modules, delivering high-value care requires transformations at every level of care delivery, including system redesign and supportive health policies. We can be advocates for and leaders of systems-level shifts toward high-value care provision, but we can also make key changes in our individual practices that are highly impactful. This collection (Modules 6 and 7) will focus on how we as individual clinicians can improve value at the bedside through simple practices in prescribing (Module 6) and communicating (Module 7) with patients.
MODULE OUTCOMES
Reflect on the impacts of high medication costs on patients
Recognize the harms of cost-related medication non-adherence
Define high-value prescribing
Explore the principles of conservative prescribing
Articulate how to identify patients who are having difficulty paying for their medication
Describe strategies to reduce out-of-pocket drug costs for patients
Reflect on how Kaiser Permanente has achieved better outcomes for patients through high rates of generic prescribing and affordable medications
Practice methods for decreasing the costs of necessary medications for a patient
